| Washburn
County
was named for former Wisconsin Governor Cadwallader
Washburn (1818-1882).
He served as our Governor and as a
U.S. Congressman; was a Civil War colonel, a newspaperman, and
also owned flour mills in Minneapolis. He had been involved with the
railroads and was president of the State Historical Society of
Wisconsin at the time of his death.
The original settlement town known
as "Mud Lake" was renamed "Spooner"
for Colonel John C. Spooner, the attorney for the railroad.
